MARCH 2009 Updated March 29, 2009
Coming face to face with heritage On April 3rd 2009, after almost 100 years, this majestic raven will no longer look out over the Rockies. Jasper's Haida pole will be laid to rest in a 'yet to be determined' location later this week. We took the opportunity to take some photos. Our photographer paused at this point, and as I stood 55 feet below the ladder I can only imagine what he must have been thinking as he faced the figure on the pole that appears to be as intrigued with our presence as we have been with theirs for all these years. We want to know what you think should happen to this cultural icon. Send us your thoughts.

Karaoke Idol by TommyK's Jasper Alpine Music If I thought having a photographer climb a ladder to take pictures of a totem pole was odd...asking another photographer to come out for 6 Monday nights and film 'wanna be' rock stars at Jasper's Karaoke Idol has to be even odder. But we did - we covered all the qualifying evenings at the various locales around town...then the semi-finals and last week - we got the Finals documented. Why? I think I can sum that up in a few words - Jasperites can sing. Actually - supposedly we can all sing - we did as children - until someone asked us not to....until someone told us we shouldn't. Well - some of the Karaoke nights had folks who should have heeded that suggestion. But by the time the final 12 were singing for that round trip ticket anywhere in North America (thanks to Darcy at the AthaB!!) the voices were pretty close to perfection. From sultry female overtures to hard raspy rock tunes - these folks were pure entertainment. A shameless plug now - on April 29th 2009 - at the regular weekly Karaoke night at the Sawridge, we will be presenting the final visuals of the entire progress...from the first person to stand up and be judged to the final performance by the happy round trip ticket winner. And in case you wish to see what you missed - you can take a copy home. DVD versions of Karaoke Idol 2009 will be available for $20. Whenever I find myself in these types of events I try to take away an intrinsic reason for putting myself (and my friends) through the time and energies expended... While unassuming at first - loud music, off key vocals, sometimes a bit too much alcohol consumption - Karaoke revealed a community of unlikely relationships. But then again - it was all about the singing - community and relationships growing from 'the arts' is never a surprise! See you April 29th!
