JANUARY 2007 JCMI Jasper Community Mission Impossible Updated: January 31, 2007 JASPER, Alberta - Its movie month in Jasper - first we have the year of 2-double o seven - now we see the JCMI - a new marketing initiative proposed for this small mountain community that is beginning to sound like a 'MISSION IMPOSSIBLE'. But
the JCMI is not new this year - it all began in August of 2006 (see the
Leather Pass Blog for 'When the Mountains throw Shadows, August 12
2006 While in its 6th month it still appears to be just as elusive as it was when the original 'IMAGINE' letters came out in the mailboxes. The only difference now is it is getting polarized and a tad nasty. The PRO faction appear to prefer that if you cant vote yes - don't vote, while the CON faction are urging everyone to get out and vote. Democracy? Others feel that it doesn't affect them or their livelihoods - but it would be impossible to live in this wonderful community oriented tourist town without being affected by tourism - directly or indirectly. And others feel that the original mandate for this Park and ecological integrity are at serious risk. While the newly formed municipality struggles to think of ways to make ends meet. The PRO faction have told the community that they will rescind the marketing initiative should it prove not to be functioning - yet they have not offered any way of measuring success or failure. Kind of like offering a child a treat for being good and then not telling the child what good is? Well - we at the Leather Pass Chronicles are tired of the rhetoric and lip service and biased opinions...so tired we want more!! What do you think? Sway a voter!! We'd like to think there is a middle ground - a solution - a (cant believe I am saying this) a compromise!! "The commercial industry of this small National Park 'city', approximately 6 blocks long and 2 blocks wide, doesn't have to result in the loss of community for the surrounding small town." M. Garrah, Aug 2006 So email us! Blog us! What do you think? We will print your comments (edited, of course, if required). Its your community and Canada (HEY out there!!) its your National Park.
JASPER IN JANUARY The year to bond, and Juan Helluva Night
Updated: January 20, 2007 JASPER, Alberta - Hard to believe it is already 20 days into the new year. But if you have ever visited Jasper in January - you would understand how time can fly. And this year is an especially busy year for the annual winter festival. 2-007 (thats double o seven) marks a year to celebrate 100 years of Jasper, a community that bonds like no other. (I must confess - the double o seven wit is not my own. BC Museums are playing on the double o seven theme for their annual conference as an opportunity to BOND!)
But its a great theme - and bonding is exactly what happens every January in Jasper. Its a great opportunity to take in wonderful events - food, wine, dance, culture. Its also a great opportunity for local organizations like the Rotary Club or the Museum to get some exposure and raise some money.
Like last weeks 'Juan Helluva Night' presented by the Jasper Rotary Club. From the fresh coconut and strawberry Margueritas to the outstanding decorations - the lower level of the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre was transformed into a night in Mexico. Which is also what some lucky person went home with - courtesy of the Rotary Club.
We've all heard about the Rotary Club - our friends and associates are even members - but what is the Rotary Club? In an explanation as deep as a tequila shot glass - they are a group of dedicated people who work together to support programming ranging from better health care programs to better schools in countries that are unable to provide these services. So while the 100+ folks filled the Sawridge in search of food and friends - they were also contributing to a much bigger picture of humanitarian effort! No wonder they called it 'Juan Helluva Night'.
And in keeping with the spirit of 007 we at DTMI are collecting these events and organizations doing what they do best throughout the year. If your club or class is doing something that brings community together - honours the people and the place in this special year - we want to know! These visual stories will be prepared into a CD/DVD format for a YEAR IN REVIEW.
