It's a Francophone July

Updated July 9, 2007

It appears to be a French July - first the Fete Francophone-Albertaine last weekend and now new images by artist Nathalie Parenteau can be found in town.  Many will know Nathalie's work when they see it in the window display at Tekarra Color on Patricia Street.  What may be less known is the new connections Nathalie has with Jasper...

Maligne Lake    The Story Teller    Encounter with Raven

Nathalie's colours and fluid imagery capture a relationship with nature that can only come from living within it.  It was no surprise that when asked to be part of the Jasper traveling art exhibition Tuktu Prayers Nathalie was quick to give several of her images.

Nathalie Parenteau was born in Montreal, Quebec and grew up surrounded by art. That culture was strong in her a family and her artistic inclination was cultivated at an early age and flourished in her twenties when she disciplined herself for a self taught artistic development. She is now an established artist, exploring both composition and colour to represent the figure in its physical environment.

Understanding at an early age that creation necessitated life experiences, she spent a few years traveling and living in the far corners of the world. After high school she spent nine months volunteering across Canada, followed by a year living close to the land in a remote corner of the Yukon Territory.

Nathalie’s years in the North have had strong affects on her art. The vastness and solitude of this latitude is evident in many of her paintings. But there is certainly a humorist side to her art as well which leads her to create whimsical images, sometimes caricaturizing both people and environment which are very popular with the outdoors enthusiasts.

Nathalie lives presently in Whitehorse, Yukon and work as a professional artist and illustrator.

Canada Day - with a French accent!

Updated July 1, 2007

If you heard the excitement at Jasper's Centennial Park and wandered over this past weekend you might have thought you were not in Alberta.  The language of choice for June 29 and 30 was French!  Apparently Alberta has approximately 65,000 Francophone, according to L'ACFA, and to celebrate their 18th year in Alberta they chose Jasper for an amazing weekend of entertainment.

From Jasper's Ecole Desrochers assisting Sylvain-Henri Simard with his CD release to CBC Radio-Canada being on site for live coverage...

The Fete Franco-Albertaine left the stage on Sunday - but it was quickly taken over by Jasper's Heritage Folk Festival.  And that in turn was followed by the Canada Day fireworks...what a fitting weekend to have the Edmonton Arts Council sponsor Jasper into the Creative City Network!

Anyone who still doubts the power of culture as an economic engine - make sure to watch CBC and listen to CBC Radio-Canada as they share this great weekend with the rest of Canada!

And special thanks to Terry, and the unnamed dog who Terry took this stick from.  Friday night's freak wind broke one of the supports in the sound booth.   What would a festival be without sound!  (and duct tape)

As a true Canadian (French, British, Irish, First Nations, American and Canadian ancestry) it's a little confusing sometimes to celebrate my heritage!

THANK YOU - or should I say - MERCI L'ACFA!

(I could have used an English version of the program though - just so I didn't miss something!)

JASPER'S CENTENNIAL EVENTS are posted!

And if you want to decrease those carbon emissions to get to Jasper - VIA Rail has Thursday trains!

Thursday September 13th's Via out of Edmonton will feature Alberta entertainer, filmmaker and author Geo Takach as part of the ARTIST ON RAILS program.  When in Jasper he will do his one man show "Will the Real Alberta Please Stand Up" at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum on September 13th.   Geo will be surrounded by the black and white photographic images of Kristen Wagner - from her book "I am Albertan".  And the evening will end with a chat downstairs at the museum with Geo and community members...on what Jasperites see as their place in Alberta.  Geo is collecting input for his upcoming book!
